Overview
The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) is one of the largest and oldest Muslim organizations in the United States, established in 1963. Based in Plainfield, Indiana, ISNA aims to promote the development of the Muslim community and provide a platform for Muslims to engage in social, educational, and interfaith activities.
The organization plays a vital role in representing Muslims in North America and works to foster a positive image of Islam in the wider society.
Meet the Founder: Dr. Rashed Nizam
Dr. Rashed Nizam, born in 1955 in Bangladesh, is a key founder of ISNA and currently serves as its Chairman. He holds an MD and has established a successful career as a board-certified ophthalmologist. Dr. Nizam has also been actively involved in various Islamic organizations, serving as president of the Islamic Center of Central Missouri and as the chairman of the Board of the Islamic School of Columbia-Missouri. His commitment to community service and unity is reflected in his extensive work within the Islamic community. He is married to Dr. Roxana Nizam, and they have three children: a daughter who is married and finishing her PhD, and two sons who are currently in medical school. The family has three grandchildren. Dr. Nizam’s dedication to education and healthcare has earned him respect in both fields, and he has received several awards for his contributions, including the Momose Afro Asian Scholarship and the Physician of the Year award.
Dr. Nizam joined the ISNA Founders Committee in 2005 and currently serves as its chair. He has been an influential member of ISNA’s board, working to support its mission and vision, which he passionately believes in. He also teaches Islam at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Missouri, contributing to the education of both Muslims and non-Muslims. His favorite quote, “It is strange how men make time to hate where life is too short to love,” encapsulates his philosophy of promoting understanding and love within communities.
Objectives and Activities
ISNA has several key objectives, including promoting the Islamic faith, fostering community development, facilitating interfaith dialogue, and supporting education and youth development programs. The organization organizes an annual convention that features lectures, workshops, and cultural activities aimed at addressing contemporary issues faced by Muslims.

Engaging in interfaith initiatives is also a significant aspect of ISNA’s work, as it seeks to enhance understanding and cooperation between different religious communities. Furthermore, ISNA supports community service initiatives focusing on social justice, humanitarian aid, and disaster relief.
